Senderos del Rocío

Gear

Gear for the Camino del Rocío

Sand, heat and long days across Doñana: this is what makes the difference. For each item we suggest three options by budget: premium, mid-range and budget.

Our own selection for the Rocío terrain; we don't show prices because they change daily: check them on Amazon.

Trail shoes or light boots

Good grip for sand, breathable and broken in before the walk. Half a size up: feet swell in the heat.

Technical socks

Seamless, merino or technical fibre: your first defence against blisters. Pack a spare pair for each day.

Sand gaiters

The most underrated item on the Rocío: low trail gaiters keep sand out of your shoes and stop chafing.

18–25 litre backpack

Ventilated back and hip belt: carry water, food and layers, nothing more. With a brotherhood, big luggage travels by cart.

Hydration

Two to three litres a day. A bladder with a tube lets you drink without stopping, and there are few fountains in Doñana.

Wide-brim hat

A cap is not enough: protect neck and ears from the May sun. Look for UPF 50 and a chin cord for the wind.

Headlamp

Days start before dawn and many nights are spent outdoors or in camp: essential and cheap.

Trekking poles

Optional on flat ground, but they ease the knees and help on soft sand. Folding or telescopic and light is best.

Cheap essentials

Blister plasters, anti-chafe and high-factor sunscreen: you need them however you go.
